Background

Ron Young, founder and owner of WA Piano and Music Company was born in Scotland. In common with the owners of many other music businesses, Ron had a previous working life and was drawn to the industry through his passion for music and musical instruments.

Ron trained and worked as a mechanical engineer and then following postgraduate qualifications taught mathematics for over twenty years. The mathematics of tuning and scaling of musical instruments (which goes back to Pythagoras) have always been of interest to him.

During this time he was a well known figure in the West Australian jazz scene leading his own band, The Ron Young Jazz Band on trumpet. The band was a prominent feature of jazz festivals for years and several live broadcasts were made from the ABC studios in Perth.

The Company

The company specialises in the hire and sales of pianos and musical instruments and offers professional repairs and set ups to brass, woodwind, stringed instruments as well as pianos.

Our commitment to quality, value and after sales service together with the recommendations of teachers has resulted in the rapid growth of our company. We sell and hire as many pianos as any other company in the state, and our very competitively priced musical instrument sales and hire programme s are well established. The addition of a music school is planned for the near future.

Ron’s two sons Angus and Alastair have been involved in the business for several years and are taking an ever-increasing role in the day-to-day running of the company.
Ron’s wife Alison and daughter Sally are also involved on a casual basis.

Staff Training

It is of great importance to our company that our staff can offer our customers qualified assistance.
They spend time each year overseas completing work experience, principally in the piano and stringed instrument trades.

Although this initiative has taken some time to set up and is not without cost, we believe that the net benefit of spending time in the workshops of overseas piano builders and violin makers is immeasurable in terms of learning and interchange of ideas.

Location

WA Piano and Music Company operate from three shops, Morris Place, Innaloo and from a large warehouse in Osborne Park. The total floor area of all the facilities is approximately 900 square metres.
