My name is Beren Scott. I have been playing the cello for around 27 years as a student of English cellist Gregory Baron and American cellist Michael Goldschlager. I have been teaching the cello for 12 years, through Instrumental Music School Services, Christ Church Grammar School, Hale School, with St. Stephen’s School and privately. This has involved cello teaching in an individual and small group setting, chamber music directing, and conducting of string orchestras.

My qualifications include a Bachelor of Music (Performance) from WAAPA, and a Diploma of Education (Secondary) from ECU majoring in Classroom Music and minoring in Instrumental Music. I greatly enjoy performing in chamber music and orchestral settings with friends and colleagues, am an avid squash player and hiker.

I deliver sequenced, flexible, scaffolded cello programs from initial note learning through to accompanied performance. These programs can be delivered to all ages from 6 upwards. I strive to build a welcoming and safe atmosphere for students as a prerequisite for deeper learning. I aim for student involvement in at least one consequential project per term, whether this be an in-house assessment, AMEB/ABRSM exam, eisteddfod, student concert and so on. For younger students, parental involvement is important. I always encourage parents to attend lessons, so we can all communicate and work in collaboration.  This is, of course, flexible depending on your personal goals in learning the cello.

A rough structure for lessons might be:

10 minutes Aural skills

10 minutes Technical work, exercises and theory

20 minutes Repertoire progression and sight-reading

In my private teaching I tend towards 40 minutes as an ideal lesson length. This can increase up to an hour for older students as needed. Lessons are at a rate of $85 per hour, in line with WAMTA minimum recommendations as an accredited teacher.

Payment can be made in advance each term via bank transfer or through cash on a per lesson basis. Advance payment includes a bonus free lesson and cancellations are carried over to the next term if provided with at least 24 hours notice, or the morning if unwell.

I teach privately from my studio in Kiara, or can travel for a small fee throughout the northern suburbs from Joondalup to Kiara.
