A beautifully crafted modern Italian violin by Matteo Crotti, an award-winning contemporary luthier based in Reggio Emilia, Italy.
Crotti brings together the traditions of Italian violin making with the perspective of a working musician. His approach places particular emphasis on sound, responsiveness and playability, as well as the quality of the carving, varnish and finish. His bowed instruments are principally inspired by the great Stradivari tradition, while reflecting his own years of research and development as a modern maker.
Born in Reggio Emilia in 1975, Crotti began his training as an instrument maker in the late 1990s. In 2002 he studied bowed-instrument construction at the violin-making school of Pieve di Cento under master luthiers Lorenzo Frignani and Marcello Bellei, before further developing his construction and varnishing techniques through his work with Marco Piccinotti.
His work has received recognition in Italian violin-making competitions, including a Special Jury Award for the acoustic qualities of one of his violins at the Città di Pisogne competition in 2011. Crotti has also received major awards for his cello and viola making.
As both a luthier and accomplished musician, Crotti approaches an instrument from the player's side as well as the maker's bench. His stated aim is to create instruments with excellent playability, dynamic range, harmonic richness and purity of sound, giving the musician an instrument capable of responding naturally to changes in colour and expression.
