More about the luthier:
Giovanni Gerosa (born 1895) was an Italian violin maker active in Morbegno, Lombardy. His instruments were constructed on classical models inspired by Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri, reflecting a strong adherence to traditional Cremonese proportions and arching. Gerosa selected fine-quality woods and finished his instruments with clear spirit varnish, lending them a refined and elegant appearance.
His work achieved public recognition through exhibitions held in Cremona in 1937 and again in 1949, placing him within the circle of twentieth-century Italian makers who contributed to the revival of classical Italian violin making. Instruments bearing his label often read “Ioannes Gerosa, fece in Morbegno” followed by the year of manufacture, attesting to his independent practice and local roots. Gerosa’s violins are valued for their craftsmanship, tasteful modelling, and faithful interpretation of the great Cremonese traditions.
